Controller Setup Guide

Xbox and Playstation controllers

Xbox and Playstation controllers should work without any configuration needed, just plug and play. If you encounter any issues, continue to the troubleshooting section below or reach out in the Discord for help.

Gamecube controllers

Windows:

If you have a a 4-port Mayflash adapter, set it to PC mode (before plugging it in) and it should work without any additional setup.

If you have an official Wii U adapter, you can use Delfinovin, which will allow your gamecube controller to be detected as a vitrual Xbox controller.

Mac:

Mayflash adapters with a PC mode should work without any additional configuration.

If your adapter doesn't have a PC mode, you may be out of luck. The Gamecube adapter driver used for Slippi doesn't expose the controllers in a way that is usable by the rest of the system. Please reach out on the Discord if you have an alternate working solution.

Switch Pro controllers

Windows:

On many systems the Switch Pro controllers will work with no additional configuration needed, but certain systems may not be able to detect them at all. Verify that your controller works by checking gamepad-tester.com.

Mac:

Switch Pro controllers connected via USB should work with no additional configuration needed.

Boxx-style controllers

If you have a boxx-style controller such as a Smash Box, B0XX, Frame1, etc, you likely have a few options for using your controller with Counterpick Labs:

Steam Deck

Users have reported getting their steam deck working by following the first step of this guide and then making sure their "gamepad action set" is set to "gamepad".

Other controllers

If your controller isn't covered by this guide and doesn't work on the web, you might be able to get it working by using controller remapping software such as vJoy, x360ce, or Xpadder. Feel free to also ping the Discord for help.

Why is my controller behaving strangely?

If your controller is behaving strangely (e.g. like a mouse + keyboard), Steam Input is typically the culprit. You can fix this by going to Steam -> Settings -> Controller -> Desktop Layout -> Edit, and switching your controller's layout to something other than "Keyboard (WASD) and Mouse". Alternatively, you can just exit Steam. Make sure to kill any Steam processes from your Task Manager or System Tray.

If Steam isn't the issue, there may be a different program such as controller remapping software that is interfering with you controller's inputs. If that's the case, try configuring the software correctly or turning it off.

The case for keyboard

Counterpick Labs was built with both controllers and keyboards in mind, so consider giving your keyboard a shot if you find yourself without a compatible controller.
